ABSTRACT<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Back\u00adground:<\/strong> The increa\u00adsing use of the Inter\u00adnet and its array of social net\u00adworks brings new ways for psy\u00adcho\u00adthe\u00adra\u00adpists to find out infor\u00adma\u00adtion about their pati\u00adents, often refer\u00adred to as patient-targeted goog\u00adling (PTG<\/span>). Howe\u00adver, this topic has been sub\u00adject to little empi\u00adri\u00adcal rese\u00adarch; there has been hardly any atten\u00adtion given to it in Ger\u00admany and the rest of Europe and it has not been inclu\u00added in ethi\u00adcal gui\u00adde\u00adli\u00adnes for psy\u00adcho\u00adthe\u00adrapy des\u00adpite the com\u00adplex ethi\u00adcal issues it rai\u00adses.<\/p>\n

Objec\u00adtive:<\/strong> This study explo\u00adred Ger\u00adman psy\u00adcho\u00adthe\u00adra\u00adpists\u2019 beha\u00advior and expe\u00adri\u00aden\u00adces rela\u00adted to PTG<\/span>, inves\u00adti\u00adga\u00adted how these vary with soci\u00adode\u00admo\u00adgra\u00adphic fac\u00adtors and the\u00adra\u00adpeutic back\u00adground, and explo\u00adred the cir\u00adcum\u00adstan\u00adces in which psy\u00adcho\u00adthe\u00adra\u00adpists con\u00adside\u00adred PTG<\/span> to be appro\u00adpriate or not.<\/p>\n

Methods:<\/strong> A total of 207 psy\u00adcho\u00adthe\u00adra\u00adpists respon\u00added to a newly deve\u00adlo\u00adped ques\u00adti\u00adon\u00adnaire that asses\u00adsed their expe\u00adri\u00adence of and views on PTG<\/span>. The study sam\u00adple was a non\u00adre\u00adpre\u00adsen\u00adta\u00adtive con\u00adve\u00adni\u00adence sam\u00adple recrui\u00adted online via several German-speaking pro\u00adfes\u00adsio\u00adnal the\u00adrapy plat\u00adforms.<\/p>\n

Results:<\/strong> Most the\u00adra\u00adpists (84.5%, 174\/207) sta\u00adted that they had not actively con\u00adside\u00adred the topic of PTG<\/span>. Howe\u00adver, 39.6% (82\/207) said that they had alre\u00adady loo\u00adked for pati\u00adent infor\u00adma\u00adtion online (eg, when they sus\u00adpec\u00adted a pati\u00adent may have been lying) and 39.3% (81\/207) knew col\u00adleagues or super\u00advi\u00adsors who had done so. Only 2.4% (5\/207) of the\u00adra\u00adpists had come across PTG<\/span> during their edu\u00adca\u00adtion and trai\u00adning.<\/p>\n

Con\u00adclu\u00adsi\u00adons:<\/strong> It is essen\u00adtial to pro\u00advide PTG<\/span> as a part of the\u00adra\u00adpists\u2019 edu\u00adca\u00adtion and trai\u00adning. Fur\u00adther\u00admore, the com\u00adplex pro\u00adblems con\u00adcerning PTG<\/span> should be intro\u00addu\u00adced into codes of ethics to pro\u00advide expli\u00adcit gui\u00addance for psy\u00adcho\u00adthe\u00adra\u00adpists in prac\u00adtice. This report pro\u00advi\u00addes initial sug\u00adges\u00adti\u00adons to open up debate on this topic.<\/p>\n
